How to Choose Custom Picture Frames

Not every print, painting or handcraft comes in a "standard" size or is best showcased by a "standard" frame set and matboard. Fortunately, there are more options for picture frames than a few "standards". If a 13x19 frame doesn't quite work for a new print, it's possible to create an unique frame that will. Custom picture frames are the best means to set off a work of non-standard dimensions or to create a presentation that reflects your personal flair.

Custom frames provide greater flexibility for showcasing a prized work of art, a unique print or a cherished photo. In addition to accommodating a wide range of dimensions, these picture frames eliminate the need for unnecessary cropping. The frames accommodate the sizing needs of your artwork, not the other way around.

- the moulding - this is the actual wooden or metal picture frame itself.
- the matboard - this is an optional component that provides an additional visual element to framed work.
- the mounting board - this provides support to the back of the frame.
- glazing - this is a transparent protective covering typically made of acrylic or glass.

Choosing mats for custom picture frames

Matting supplies are the best place to start when building unique picture frames. First, select a custom mat that compliments the item to be framed. Typically, the color or texture of the mat will be the determining factor. Once the mat is chosen, calculating the frame size you'll need becomes easier. For example, a 13x19 frame would be less suitable than an 18x24 frame if a 2.5" mat is to be used in framing a 13x19 photo.

In addition to appearance, consider the sizing of a mat. The general rule of thumb is to measure the item you wish to frame and subtract 1/4" from your mat window opening. When creating a double mat effect, subtract 1/2" from the primary mat window opening and 1/4" from the secondary mat. Keep in mind, though, different effects can be achieved by playing with these dimensions.
